Credit Union Savings Help New Business Start Up
Castle & Minster Credit Union have helped one of our members to launch a new business. Peter Hardy a long term member of the credit union has been encouraged to save regularly with Castle & Minster and has used some of his savings to help establish his new bike shop – Bike Works in Linthwaite, Huddersfield. Teacher Peter was made redundant at Christmas when his school was closed.
Peter has said “Being made redundant was a tremendous shock, but fortunately my savings with Castle & Minster Credit Union has provided a nest egg to cushion the blow and help me get back on my feet. I don’t like borrowing money and with no regular income showing, this probably would not have been a feasible option for me. My savings with the credit union have provided a real life-line in times of need.
I initially joined the credit union as it is owned by it’s members. I know that my money will be used to provide loans, within the credit union’s ethos of responsible lending, to local people who may have been turned away by high street financial organisations. I have always received a friendly and professional service from Castle & Minster and cannot sing their praises enough!”.
Tony Hood, Chair of Board of Directors said “Peter is a great example of how credit unions can support a community ethos and help keep money in the local economy. One of our key aims is to encourage our members to save in one of our many tailored savings accounts. This reduces dependency on loans in times of need.“

Annual General Meeting 2012
Annual General Meeting
Our AGM took place on 16 February and was attended by over 30 members, directors and staff. Key points in the annual report were highlighted, such as the decision to pay 2.5% interest on junior saver accounts, but to remain cautious and prudent and waver paying a dividend to members for the last financial year. Directors were also on-hand to answer any questions from members attending. Rule changes, as a result of new legislation introduced early this year, were also discussed and agreed. These include:
- adopting a new common bond which enables us to widen membership to people and organisations outside the Kirklees boundary who meet certain criteria and opening membership to community groups in particular
- specifying an age of 18 years for young savers to convert to adult membership or be able to apply for election as an officer of the credit union
- introducing an annual charge of £5 on dormant accounts,
- retaining the opportunity to introduce paying interest bearing shares in the future
- setting the maximum number of directors at 11 with a 33% restriction on corporate directors

There are also a number of other smaller changes to accommodate the new legislation. A copy of the new rules can be found below, with a summary of the changes and more information about corporate members and non deferred / deferred shares.
